2012 Fisker Karma Plug-in Hybrid First Drive Review

( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2012 Fisker Karma Plug-in Hybrid is like no other car on this earth. It is stunningly beautiful, very expensive, and if you plug it in every night and don’t drive over 40 miles, it can also be very green. It is the first green luxury sports sedan that is propelled only by electric motors. Of course the Karma also has a gasoline engine to charge up the battery when the juice gets low so you can drive it about 300 miles like a normal car. The Karma is also very big and very heavy. At over 5000 pounds it own the road and it should because it costs a little bit over 100K.

Saw one today at the Beverly Center mall. Very attractive car. I thought it was a Lambo.

  2. bbenjaminblu:

@MrBarrelomonkeys in this car, the gas engine is connected to a generator to recharge the batteries, charging at home is over.

  3. MrBarrelomonkeys:

Batteries require too much maintenance, and they only last for 5-10 yrs, ANSI they’re about 10,000 to replace, and you need to wait 12 hrs for a change

  4. G0Far:

981ft.lb TQ and 403 HP is plenty good for me considering a Jaguar XJ produces 385HP. So if anything, this Karma is more powerful then many luxury automobiles today. And, it weighs as much as a RR Phantom.

  5. ricodelta1:

    0-60 in over 6 seconds?

thats 80% of your battery gone right there

  6. Horizonz2:

it sucks right now when you think electric is spelled with an a….

  7. sk8andgame:

its going to suck when all cars are aletric and gay and weak with no power

  8. ShermanMR2:

Hope you guys enjoyed our sunny SoCal weather while you were here.

  9. oaklandcar:

You guys always get the best cars!!

  10. stacekar:

For $100K I would buy a Tesla instead and be 100% electric.

  11. silatube:

As JETZcorp says, even with coal-sourced energy the EV is more efficient and cleaner than most gasoline-powered ones. The Karma is the least-efficient EV around but it’s still a step up environmentally when compared to “equivalent” vehicles.

I ordered one, but I picked a difficult color (Laguna) that won’t be here until June, alas!

@arashn89: plugging in is easy. Charger is $750 at Home Depot. (This assumes you have a garage of course. Fancier charger is ~$2k if you want TOU.)

  12. TheBumCrease:

    Haha you’re just amazing

  13. toastedbum:

It looks like the Pringles man in the front!

  14. JETZcorp:

Depends on where you are. In my city, the electricity comes from a hydroelectric dam. And even when it does come from coal, electric powerplants are EXTREMELY efficient compared to ANY gas engine found in ANY car ever sold, so the pollution-per-mile is still substantially improved. And, as I hinted at, something like 45% of electric power in America comes from sources other than coal, primarily hydroelectric and nuclear, which are both zero-emissions.

    BTW, I drive a 5.9L V8.

  15. AlexKBK:

Whats up with the cars grill? Looks like a mustache :D

  16. steve37774:

When I first seen this car I thought it looked like the Porsche panmera

  17. romanmicagearguy:

So this is what I think…a complete unique and different car that has some growing pains but will sell to those folks who want to own something that nobody else has on the block. Fun, expensive, cool, heavy, fastish hybrid

  18. jonaswang79:

Roman, I was sort of waiting for a “so, this is what I think about the car” statement. Otherwise it was great as always.

  19. 05Forenza:

higher electric bill with virtually no cost for gas. Pretty sure that makes alot more sense and saves a ton in the long run…or immediately.

  20. romanmicagearguy:

900 ft lbs of torque is crazy but the car has no gears so it’s like putting all of that power through fourth gear from the stop light….you just don’t feel it like you would in a car with traditional reduction gears….plus the Karma weights 5300 pounds.

  21. RunsLikeaNose:

Besides, only rich people can afford these cars, and rich people usually also drive fancy sports cars that get 10-15 mpg.. so they’re actually adding another car onto the road. Environmentally friendly is not for the average person at this price range.

  22. lgreen5:

Roman, you didn’t put the Karma through it paces? 400 so called horses should have been evident. What about the 900 ft lbs of torque? Did the company tell you to take it easy on their fragile parade wagons?

  23. RunsLikeaNose:

Electricity is produced by burning coal… so it’s not really that environmentally friendly.

  24. NathanDAdlen:

That’s okay. Fisker was concerned that I would try to mate with a Karma… again. Thanks for watching!

  25. doublesizzle:

Went to the dealership here in Vegas and went for a ride. Let me tell you this car is beautiful and fast as hell.
